The Universal Healthcare Trend

One must give credit where it is due: Arnold Schwarzenegger's support of near-universal healthcare for Californians is admirable and worth applauding. At this early point, it's almost impossible to say whether it will be an effective method of providing universal insurance, but it's at least a step in the right direction.

It's regretable though that it has been Republicans governors in Democratic states leading the universal healthcare trend. Democrats on the national level have been utterly ineffective at promoting it. They should try a lot harder though, particularly if they truly want to win back the presidency in 2008. I hope John Edwards actually maintains his hints of genuine economic populism, and I wouldn't mind seeing other potential candidates pick up on it.

It is both fair and politically effective, I think - not a bad combination in this day and age.
